The Period-Proof Underwear Brand Challenging Patriarchy

“Period-proof underwear that protects from leaks and sometimes the patriarchy”

Even though periods have finally snuck into the conversation within the last couple of years, being a “real menstruating human” is still a stigma-fuelled source of embarrassment and shame for many women in 2016. A lot of things have been said and done, like the women who free-bled while running the London marathon in 2015 and the #PeriodsAreNotAnInsult hashtag that erupted after Donald Trump referred to GOP debate moderator Megyn Kelly as having had “blood coming out of her wherever”. But in a time of constant development and innovation, pads, tampons, moon cups – and especially free bleeding – still don’t feel all that convenient or liberating. One brand working to forge a happier friendship between our ovaries and our knicker drawer is the feminist panty label THINX. As one of their NY subway billboard campaigns declared: “Period-proof underwear that protects from leaks and sometimes the patriarchy, but not from manspreading. We tried, though.”

Since 2014, the women behind THINX have been developing period-proof undergarments and fighting for equal rights, all in an effort to change society’s perceptions of the female body towards an even more progressive view. Utilising a unique layering technology, the knickers can absorb up to two tampons’ worth of blood while keeping your hoo-ha dry. These skivvies are available in six different styles with different absorbencies, meaning there’s a perfect pair for every day. As if that wasn’t enough, THINX is also tackling the problem of girls missing school due to lack of access to feminine hygiene products. Teaming up with AFRIpads, every pair of THINX bought will fund the production of reusable cloth pads for women in Uganda.
