teamLab’s Crystal Universe in Tokyo
The Japanese creative collaborative group teamLab has put together their largest immersive exhibition to date in a 3000-sq-meter space in Tokyo. Entitled “Walk Through the Crystal Universe”, the summer exhibition features both new and previously displayed virtual artworks that are scaled to colossal proportions. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a kaleidoscopic and multi-sensory space of colours and lights that constantly change based on individual and collective actions. The visual experience is then enhanced by distinctive scents tailored specifically to each artwork. One of the most impressive installations housed in the exhibition recreates the smell of the universe. Devised under the supervision of astronaut Naoko Yamazaki, the labyrinth-shaped artwork enables patrons to take part in a truly spacey experience.
Utilising a specialist gang of creative hardware, network and computer vision engineers, mathematicians, CG animators and architects, teamLab tests the potential of ultra-technological experiences in an art context, with impressive results. See more images of the mind-blowing installation below.
