Demna Gvasalia and his team made the savvy and strategic move to show their spring 2017 collection during Paris Couture Week. They might have caught the buyers while they are in town whilst their budgets are plentiful, even if that meant whipping up this collection in only four months.
Perhaps that is why Vetements enlisted some big-name brands to help them out. The collaborations featured some reworked signature pieces from Carhartt, Canada Goose, and Dr. Martens. Oversized proportions and deconstruction injected a high fashion twist into some practical wardrobe staples.

Irony is a favourite tool of the trade for the Parisian label, and this season was no different; bringing the infamous Juicy Couture velour tracksuit of the Noughties to Couture Week, making the sartorially credible crowd in attendance smile. Other notable pieces included the waist-high Blahnik boots in richly toned satins and ridiculously oversized workwear dungarees.
Presenting their work in department store Galeries Lafayette during opening hours also caused a scene that could be confused with a Black Friday sale. Police presence among the hustle to get into the hottest show in town was particularly on-brand for the label known for its sold out “Polizei” logo coats. Vetements are certainly infusing some youthful attitude into the otherwise stuffy Haute Couture schedule, finally bringing it into the 21st century.
