Whoopi Goldberg has curated an exhibition on Marilyn Monroe. The show, which is a result of Goldberg’s “strong connection” towards the late-starlet, will take place at New Jersey’s Mana Contemporary. Entitled “Marilyn: Character Not Image”, the special event has been described as a capsule exhibition. Works presented include personal artworks and poetry from Monroe, as well as her iconic “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress and photographs by Milton Green and Weegee.
Goldberg hopes that the show, which opens 25 September, will portray the often overlooked vulnerability of the silver screen siren. “The image of Marilyn Monroe – the icon – endures and strengthens as time goes by, but her personal life remains a mystery,” said the View host in a press release.
The idea of the show is to aptly portray a woman, and not an icon. Whoopi Goldberg might seem like a odd member of the curatorial process, but as a pioneer of both big screen and broadway, there is no doubt she can relate to Monroe in more than a few ways.
