If Winnie Harlow’s ascension to the top of the modelling industry has taught us anything, it’s that no height phases the Canadian. The supermodel and Puma Brand ambassador appeared on the rooftop of an undisclosed skyscraper to announce the brand’s latest lifestyle sneaker—the Puma Cruise Rider. The bright design embraces shades of teal, bright yellow and a dash of pink alongside a cushy midsole that will be sure to keep you cruising through even the tallest of challenges. We caught up with Harlow to discuss moving to London as a child, her scepticism of New Year’s Resolutions and why she doesn’t allow herself to get complacent.
You are one of today’s most sought after models, how would you describe yourself and why do you think so many brands want to work with you?
There has been a recent movement of acknowledging that your differences make you beautiful and this is something that I have championed since I started in the industry. It is refreshing to work with brands who share the same values.
You’ve been with PUMA for a couple of months now, what has been your experience so far and what’s next for you?
I love my PUMA family and I’m so grateful for this partnership. I really respect that they are true collaborators and look for my opinions and input. The partnership feels truly collaborative which can be rare.
PUMA is known as a brand that blends fashion culture with style, why is that important to you?
I think blending fashion and culture with style is really important because you get the full essence of who someone is.
You are making big moves and it’s clear you are a successful woman, how have you accomplished your goals?
I have always pushed myself, even by doing things that make me scared or nervous. I never allow myself to get complacent. I am always thinking “what’s next?” and setting goals.
Which is the biggest move in your career so far? And what is your next goal?
My biggest move would be moving to London on a whim for my career and the biggest thing I’ve achieved so far in my career would be my Vogue covers. I definitely want to achieve more of those. I think it’s incredible. Even 5 to 10 years ago people wouldn’t have thought that you would ever see someone like me on a Vogue cover but now the time has come and I’m so proud of that.
PUMA has just announced that you will be the face of their newest Cruise Rider shoe. Why did you decide to support it and what do you think about the silhouette?
I love the easy wearability of the shoes and as soon as I saw it, I knew it would work well with my wardrobe staples.
It looks like you express yourself through fashion and your style, can you describe it in a sentence?
My style is in between casual streetwear and runway and straight off the runway.
How would you pair PUMA’s Cruise Rider with an outfit in your closet?
I would pair the Cruise Riders with a bodysuit that was in matching colours.
What is your one go-to outfit? What’s something you can’t leave home without?
My one go-to outfit would be anything in my boyfriend’s closet and that’s usually sweatpants and a t-shirt. One thing I can’t live without is jewellery.
Fashion is something you are most well-known for, what other interests or hobbies do you have?
I am so into skincare, I always have been from when I was a kid. I used to go through my mum and grandmother’s bathroom cabinets. I’m also really interested in acting, so we will see how that goes.
What’s something most people may not know about you?
I’m kind of an open book if I am honest. What you see is what you get.
Do you have New Year’s resolutions? Are you already thinking about how to make them happen?
I don’t really believe in New Year’s resolutions because I think that if you want to change something you should just do it. You shouldn’t have to wait for a specific time frame to get your grind on or make a change.
