With a keen interest in the city’s evolving use of space, artist Yuri Pattison – and 2016 Frieze Artist Award winner – has create new work involving the representation of a theoretical live/work environment inspired by modernist architecture and science fiction. Developed during his Chisenhale Gallery Create Residency (2014-16), in his new exhibition “user, space”, the artist suggests a future where social and political competences are regarded as utopian.
Yuri Pattison’s main interests are found in transparency, which is a characteristic he connects to both work and out-of-work environments. The reason for this unexpected fusion of previously detached domains lies on the open communication of data and the transparent architectures of new models for shared live/work space. For the past few years Pattison’s work has been based on the evolving east London’s Tech City, the Silicon Roundabout, and the London Hackspace — a non-profit community run space for workshops and skill sharing. Through these highly technology-driven environments, Pattison aims to explore the politics of shared workspaces which are applicable to many cities across the world.
The new digital and sculptural work includes active elements that create an immersive installation, which occupies the entirety of the Chisenhale Gallery. Using multiple tech-devices, Pattison contrasts abstracted views on contemporary workspaces and experimental living spaces, which help portray the penetrating nature of new technologies that clearly influence how, and where we live and work.
