In what could be read as a snub to the art market, London-based design and architecture collective Assemble is the winner of the Turner Prize 2015.
Assemble, whose core work include refurbishment of houses and introducing new public spaces, impressed the judges with their approach against “corporate gentrification”. Their most lauded project was “Granby Four Street”, a regeneration initiative in Liverpool’s Toxteth estate, where they worked closely with the residents. The collective consists of 18 members active in the fields of art, design and architecture. Being widely interdependent as a group, they often incorporate the public as permanent participants to reconnect architectural spaces with their occupants.
The other nominees of this year’s prize include Bonnie Camplin, Janice Kerbel and Nicole Wermers.
