“For me, there are two kinds of identity – one that’s intimate and one you adopt. Our adopted identity is often a reaction to the circumstances we’re born into, a reaction to things we can’t choose such as the colour of our skin, our sex or our family background. Personally, I find exactly this kind of debate within people fascinating and attractive – people who regard their surroundings critically and interact differently with them”, says artist and tattooist Monty Richthofen.
