A visual conversation, Obey is about the rules that are designed to suppress identity, in schools within authoritarian countries. It is a prelude to living under a restrictive regime in which total freedom of individuality and expression is a threat. The rules define the terms of societal acceptance, and specifically the limitations on appearance favour a communistic and traditional idea of identity. It is a system designed to produce “acceptable” versions of people.
Obey is not just a series about rules and conformity; it is a celebration of beauty, freedom and authenticity. A visual reminder of how multifaceted people really are.
Rebels. Troubled. Hopeless.
They paint a picture of what non conformity looks like. They sow the seeds of fear and resentment towards all the people who don’t adhere to the rules. Students who freely express their personalities become ostracised and labeled bad, aggressive, promiscuous and undesirable.
We lose a sense of autonomy and self awareness.
When students feel that they must constantly project a certain image in order to fit in, they may lose touch with their true selves and the values that are most important to them. This becomes a tool for authoritarian countries to control people’s personal freedoms, leading to a climate of fear and distrust.
We can be so much more than what we’re taught. A lot gets lost within this kind of system, so we compromise on the kind of people we introduce into the world. The freedom to express our individuality and speak our minds is crucial to fostering open discussions, driving societal progress and ultimately dismantling oppressive regimes.
